Oh I never mark my button position in the back of the fabric but you are right you do need make sure the fabric stays straight.
I just do it by eye.
I always do the middle row first.

This is terrific!! Wish I had seen it before a had to make six 14’ x 1’ cushions for pew seating for a production of HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME for the choir which is part of the show. They were NOT as clean at all but never were seen by the audience…so no problem ;-) Can’t wait to do this much better and clean technique!
