I've heard similar tales out of very rural areas from northern Europe. It's a very fascinating lore, especially when you come across stories like this where the tracks are in a precise straight light or with each foot print directly in front of the other like it walked on a line up literally every rooftop. You can't help but wonder if it really is some supernatural creature, because anyone doing stuff like that as a prank wouldn't be so precise, especially if that prank was done by, say, teenage boys. They would have giggled too hard and screwed up the pattern at some point, especially if they were drunk. I've heard stories, too, where the hoof prints suddenly disappear and then reappear in the same exact line as if the creature who'd made them teleported a few feet ahead! Very fascinating legends indeed!

I haven’t heard this story since I was 11 in a book called “Strange but True”. That booked freaked me out. I’m now 58. I wonder if it may have been a probe from an advanced civilization sampling the elements in the snow. The content of the snow samples can inform loads of environmental info and drones are now capturing objects that are small and crazy fast. It may have been airborne sending out a pulse which left that mark. Dunno, spitballing. Love the content here. 🙂

Reminds me a bit of the January 1909 outbreak of Jersey Devil sightings, which included hoofed tracks that seemed to climb walls and run across roofs. Outstanding story telling, thank you! 😃

I remember this from a little booklet of strange & eerie stories from around the world at the grocery store checkout when I was a kid in early 80s. I've still got it stored away somewhere.

Similar happened in the states, I forget where, maybe Pennsylvania, I think it was an owl.

Rudolph was drunk while on holiday, he was still holding a pint with one fore limb and a stubbed out cigarette in the other hence bi-pedal. The bright nose he is blessed/cursed with, aided his journey because there is a distinct lack of unnatural light after dark on Dartmoor.

Same as God and church. They feed on their own in soups or barbecued. They eat those they have killed or feed their enemies their children, dead relatives. Man does that, but he calls himself god.

I remember reading about this as a kid 60ish years ago in my weekly magazine encyclopedia part work called "Look and Learn". It set me in good stead, knowing a little about a lot. I know the locations that you're talking about too.

One suggestion I have seen is that it was a hot air balloon dragging a rope or something.

It would be interesting to see what the wind was like the night before, the day of and the day after. All i can even fathom for an explanation is some kind of rolling object being pushed by the wind. It would account for getting into fenced of areas and the tops of buildings and across the water. If the wind was strong enough, it can easily carry something light enough 100 miles in one night while still being heavy enough to leave prints in the snow.

Giles is pronounced as Jiles. I'm English so I'm kind of a stickler for pronunciation.

Since I first heard this story I've always thought it must have been something with wings to account for the distance and crossings and that the tracks were subject to sublimation throughout the night to reshape into a hoof-like shape. Otherwise it's a winged goat. One of those two things...
