Fascinating video. I’ve fixed my own cars all my life, but really had no idea about the workings of automatic transmissions. I found it amusing that they use planetary gears and bands much like the earliest manual transmissions did. :)
ОтветитьNot a DIY job, but now I know what is inside. Thanks
ОтветитьThanks for trying on the sun-planetary-ring gear stuff.
Everyone gets tongue-tied over it, but this is the best I've seen yet.
Good
Ответитьfor anyone that may be trying to rebuild: if you do that rag trick between two gears MAKE SURE you clean out all the torn bits that come off the rag. i personally just hold the gear with a rag and don’t let it spin in that manner and there’s a lot less lint that can get inside the transmission and that’s always a plus
ОтветитьI am taking apart front wheel and rear wheel drives atm
But after watching this i am gonna say to my boss fuck yeah i am ready for rebuilding too
Thanks alot mate 🤟
Phenomenal video and explanations. Thoroughly informative and entertaining, 8 years later 👏
ОтветитьExcellent video, I kinda figured on how dark the fluid was it was brunt clutchs!!! Question: when changing atf should you do a series of running atf through the tranny to clean most of the atf from the torque converter??
ОтветитьDecember 26, 2021 Happy Holidays! I found you today Eric and take you so much for the auto transmission tutorial. Like Hannah Hunt, I too drives a manual car (2015 Nissan Micra S). I think around 200k - 250k, need to replace the clutch disk on my Micra. About 112K mileage now and no problem(s) so far. Takes me from point A to B. Be safe Take care Be healthy to you all. Again happy holidays!
ОтветитьI got a kick out of that, as an Industrial Technologist one of my duties was checking the tolerances on the clutch plates for CAT 789 drive transmissions, you'd love the size of the planetaries in those.
ОтветитьGreat vid !
ОтветитьExplanation and its timing duration alongwith parts shown are very good.... well-done
ОтветитьThanks a lot 👍
ОтветитьI would like to know what it means for the light on the dashboard is reading A T ??
ОтветитьWhat can u do with these parts? They look quite aesthetic!
ОтветитьEric, thanks for totally dismantling each of the unit. It is very very difficult to understand sun & planet gear drive. Anyway you have tried your best. In addition you have tried to show hydraulics part of the transmission which has logic for working of each valve, springs, balls, holes, NRVs etc. My question is are you going to assemble it back. I think only OEM can find a fault & reassemble it in a correct way.
Ответитьgreat video! thanks!
ОтветитьGood description that adequately caters to the understanding of automatic drives. Gives a good insight to the control elements as well as transmission from torque converter upto delivery of power at the wheels through the trans axle.
ОтветитьBoggles my mind that someone invented all this from scratch, they think on a different level
ОтветитьTwo planetary gears go round the outside, round the outside, round the outside, chick chicka chick chick chick boom....
ОтветитьThank you for the video filled with information par excellent, keep up the good work bro!
ОтветитьErick you're doing tidy work hope it was africa i would vist your workshop now and then .i like it
ОтветитьExcellent video ... Thanks for sharing .. Never know what was in a transmission - but now I can say I know a few buzz words :)
Lever - Park, Drive, Reverse, 1, 2, 3, Low
Valve Body - (Brains) - valves to allow pressure to various gears (directs oil pressure to different galleries) opposite pressure (Differential pressure); Pump - (Heart) Oil Pressure, Accumulators (Hydraulic cousin dampers like shock absorbers), Governor, Bands, Clutches and 2 sets of Planetary Gears (outer housing center is the sun gear, center Planetary Gear, outer Ring gear)
Good video for me I'm justgetting started
ОтветитьDid you actually repair this and put it back together? That would be an awesome PART 3.
ОтветитьThank you...that was neet~!
ОтветитьWhat a great tear-down and analysis. Thank you.
The mind it takes to engineer the valve body alone is astounding. To integrate it into the various other components is an engineering marvel! It obviously takes a well integrated design team. Then the idea has to go to casting and machining. No wonder automatics are so expensive.
I'll stick with manuals myself, those I've refurbished without to many issues.
My question is this can sand make gear not to select very well
ОтветитьThis video being 10 yrs old, the quality of video is great
ОтветитьI've been trying for years and years to understand how these things work, i still don't get it.😢😢😢
ОтветитьEric I really enjoy your videos, thanks!! I was pulled into this wonderment about automatic transmissions because my wife's inherited 2011 Buick regal with a 6t40 transmission recently failed, and within 2 months of the dealer changing the ATF fluid at 60k miles, probably for the first time. It just stopped working in D and all forward gears, reverse still worked. So frustrating and expensive, and I suspect the fluid change precipitated the failure. We are having an independent shop swap in a remanufactured transmission as I write this. Good lord those transmissions are complicated beasts!!! Sooo many points of possible failure, especially for the 6T40 which seems prone to early failure for various reasons like broken snap rings destroying delicate internals. The dealer said there were no metal particles in the old fluid, but they also said they don't flush anymore, nor do they replace the filter, which for this transmission you have to remove from the vehicle to get it open enough to access. Getting into the transmission itself to diagnose was the next step - or just replace it, which after watching this video and a couple more on the 6T40 seemed like an easy choice! Thanks again. Do you have something similar for CVT transmissions?
ОтветитьHow do you know what to torque everything to when rebuilding it all? :)
ОтветитьWhich of those would you call the reverse gear though?
ОтветитьAnd please believe me when I said that your video have taught me a lot because I even have the same transmission but giving a little problem right now. Much respect to you bro💪
ОтветитьAmazing video
ОтветитьI have a car that has been down for 3 years. Really had no ideas where to look. These videos helped me tremendously. Can't wait til tomorrow to finally get started. I don't buy parts until I have an understanding of the system I am working on. You helped me sooo much.
ОтветитьHow automatic transmission select gear?
ОтветитьExcellent thanks
ОтветитьNice explanation
ОтветитьMy transmission just only select reverse gear.....can it by the solenoid for front gear
ОтветитьGoogle plus?
Ответитьyep i put amsoil trans fluid in and ruined my 06 avalon after 30miles and it was 2 miles after hitting 240k on the odometer.
ОтветитьThanks for the info I have learnt alot
ОтветитьAnd all that goes out the window and gets replaced with EVs with no torque converter, no clutch and no gears. The motor is permanently connected to the wheels via the drive chain, so just one speed. Neutral is a set of caster wheels that go under the drive wheels after you jack it up. Some have a fake neutral that makes the motor spin in the direction you push and fake park that holds the motor firm when you try to push. Reverse gear puts the motor in reverse. So, theoretically reverse can go just as fast as forward. What a joke!
ОтветитьThanks
ОтветитьThanks Eric I am very impressed about your explanation, I am a mechanic but I am much more enlightened with your presentation. Thank you very much.
ОтветитьGreat video series. The valve body is like an analog computer using fluid pressure, digital valves, and one way check valves to determine which gear to engage.
Ответить🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
ОтветитьWell, that makes AT much simpler in my view, I expected it to be much more sophisticated. This is the 666'th comment btw.
ОтветитьAwesome video man! Brilliant. Well explained and detailed enough without blowing the brain cells to smithereens! What a pice of engineering.
