Ticket to Ride and The End of Legacy Games

Candidly, I've never been a fan of Ticket to Ride. This legacy version had so much hype, I was wondering if it maybe it'd win me over... Now it seems like I'm not missing much...

Frankly, the way you felt about TTR:Legacy is exactly the way I felt about every Legacy game I've played. Out of the 3 ive tried (HP: Hogwarts Battle, Pandemic Legacy S1 and S0) I only managed to finish Season 1. And the best I can say about it was "Eh, it's fine I guess". But I'd still much rather play regular Pandemic. The story is always forgettable, the mini expansions seem more about the joy of opening boxes and getting stuff, rather than about adding anything meaningful to the game.

These silly intros are getting to be very annoying. Who needs them? Be humorous in your review. You don't need to pretend you've run out of blue paint.

I actually really loved Legends of The West and disagree with his takes, but Tom's bravery in crafting his perfect cosplay kept me watching all the way through

8/12 games in for Ticket to Ride: Legends of the West and as a Ticket to Ride Fan, we love it. 9/10 I’ve played Pandemic Legacy S1, 10/10 and Clank! Legacy: 8/10.

Could have been a tram network in a new city? Then it could build the native of that city and feather cool expantons like underground and elevated rails. Pluss avoids issues with native killing and practical enslaved workers.

it's amazing to see susd keep having such bad takes. TTR is an intro game. it is a light and easy going game. why would the legacy version change that? The mechanics come and go, and never overwhelm. Pandemic legacy is supposed to be a hard, tense nail biter of a game. the game wants you to lose some. it includes mechanics knowing that it is hard and you will lose. TTR was never that type of game. I think you put your unreasonable expectations on the game and then drew some pretty bad conclusions. Its ok to not like a game. but to give this kind of review without finishing it and think "no one will like this" despite having a 9 rating on bgg.... terrible take. personally, i find regular TTR boring at this point. it's play if someone wanted, but would never recommend. This game has actually reinvigorated my desire to play this game.

I've been thinking about the theme and its failure to fit into a light-hearted game, namely how they should have chosen a different one.

Why not instead explore a hypothetical future of 21st century railway development in the US, where players have to balance developing passenger lines while maintaining industrial ones?

Why are so many themes historical rather than aspirational?

Even an acknowledgement of the historical injustice of the colonial invasion of north America is no longer enough for a bloody board game to exist? Seriously? Can't have a game set in a time period because it doesn't actively include genocide?

People who really enjoy Ticket to Ride? The Spiels de Jare winner that sold like 10 million copies across like 50 different versions? Sounds like a niche audience.

Fundamentally (and Tom is very clear about the framing) this is a review of LEGACY Ticket to Ride. And I can understand from that angle it is disappointing. But for me who was looking for TICKET TO RIDE Legacy this is a phenomenal box. Every small addition to the mechanic soup is a delightful new taste to the fundamental good food that is Ticket To Ride.

And the core mechanical changes that have been made are good, really good.

Our favorite legacy games are Clank! Acquisitions Inc., Pandemic Season 0 and My City. Pass on this one.

Legacy games can be great but unfortunately I have never finished a Legacy game.

Our group is enjoying it, and to be honest, the incremental changes have been really nice. We tried Legacy Risk a million years ago and we had to relearn the game every single time.

Recently finished playing this with my family and it's the first time we've completed a legacy game with my daughter, loved it. Yeah it's not the most complex, or crunchy, or interesting or any of those other words that we band about, but it was good fun!

Why do british game reviewers always have to do their reviews in that goofy, faux chummy style?

I completely disagree with this review. I played this with my game group and we loved it. It wasn't a "safe" game - we found that you had to change your approach to the game with each new addition. You need to optimise the scoring opportunities offered by the new rules and not stick to your old strategies or you would be left behind. We had to continually adapt our play as different elements came in, combined with other parts and then left again, and you had to squeeze the most out of things before they ended. There are interesting choices to make, including which tickets to go for because the value offered by postcards can outweigh their straight point value. Finally, we thought that the variety of different types of new rules and scoring mechanisms that are added was interesting and imaginative and added good flavour to the game - we were always excited to see what the next surprise would be when we opened the boxes.

Gotta say, I love the score sheets being little cheques to put in the bank. Totally unnecessary, but so beautifully thematic!

Don’t listen to Tom. We have thoroughly enjoyed this game and look forward to playing it again even when we finish it which isn’t something I can say about any other legacy game. It’s so much better than normal ticket to ride as well, and the competitive element keeps us head down the whole time while creating a nice amount of tension through the whole game. I can’t recommend it enough.

So far Clank! Legacy has been my favorite legacy game (or Gloomhaven).

Lol every time a game is set in the Americas they have to apologize to the natives, we are pretty much used to that now, no biggie.
